Doctoral Program in Anthropology Application Requirements

Applicants to the Master's and PhD programs must meet the following requirements:

Foreign language proficiency: A minimum score of 65 on the YDS or YÖKDİL exam, or a minimum TOEFL score of 78, which is the equivalent score according to the most recent version of ÖSYM's "Uluslararası Yabancı Dil Sınavları Eşdeğerlikleri" (Equivalences of International Foreign Language Examinations) document. If ÖSYM updates the equivalence scores, the updated equivalences will apply.

ALES: A minimum score of 55 in the Equal Weight (Eşit Ağırlık) score type of ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam).

Undergraduate GPA: A minimum of 2.50 out of 4.00.

Letters of reference: At least one (1) letter for Master's applications and at least two (2) letters for PhD applications.

Statement of purpose: A statement of purpose written in English that meets the requirements described below.

Statement of Purpose

Applications are evaluated primarily on the basis of the statement of purpose. To initiate the process, we kindly ask applicants to upload their statement of purpose as soon as possible.

Your statement of purpose must include a clear research question. You are expected to explain why this question is worth studying and how it is significant both academically and socially. In other words, the statement of purpose should demonstrate that you situate your research question within an intellectual and theoretical context, that you present a research orientation consistent with anthropology's methods of knowledge production, and that you can justify why your study is valuable.

Explaining your reasons for choosing our department with reference to the research areas of our faculty members will be considered an advantage. You are expected to cite the relevant literature and to write your statement in English.

Admission Process

Applicants to both the Master's and PhD programs will be invited to an oral examination (interview).
